Tea & Health

Due to a recent research study, it is now being indicated that drinking tea may decrease the risk of Ovarian Cancer. In the December '05 issue of Archives of Internal Medicine, there was a population study conducted by researchers at the National Institute of Environmental medicine in Stockholm, Sweden. The study was known as the Swedish Mammography Cohort.

Between 1987 and 1990, women were sent an invitation to enroll in the study, as well as, a 67-item food frequency questionnaire to be completed (68% of the women reported drinking tea at least once a month). The final research group consisted of 61,057 women between the ages of 40 and 76 years of age. Following enrollment the women would become involved in a 15-year followup period, during which time 301 women were diagnosed with epithelial Ovarian Cancer.

The researchers observed that a consumption level of 2 cups of tea per day was significantly inversely associated with the risk of cancer. These women had a 46% lower risk of Ovarian Cancer than women who either rarely drank tea, or drank no tea at all. It was also found that, for each additional cup of tea consumed per day, was associated with an 18% lower risk of Ovarian Cancer. This comprehensive, epidemiological study shows a significant association between increased tea consumption and reduced risk of Ovarian Cancer.
