Carriacou: An undiscovered tropical gem in the tri-island
nation of Grenada
Carriacou offers a variety of activities that suit a plethora of interests; sailing enthusiasts can set their sails and ride the island’s warm breezes, scuba divers can discover the breathtakingly beautiful coral reefs that surround the island, and boating enthusiasts can observe the island’s long-standing tradition of wooden boat building first-hand.
Carriacou has long been considered one of the Caribbean’s prime sites for scuba enthusiasts. Carriacou offers everything a scuba enthusiast can ask for: good visibility, large fish and untouched coral reefs rich with aquatic wildlife.
The island of Carriacou is literally surrounded by coral reefs; in fact, the island takes its name from an old Arawak Indian word meaning ‘island of reefs.’ There are numerous dive sites located off the coast of Carriacou. The corals surrounding this beautiful island hold many treasures waiting to be discovered.
Sailing is another great way to pass the time during your stay in Carriacou. In fact, the island will be hosting the 41st Annual Carriacou Regatta this summer from August 4-6. Highlights include the Miss Aquaval Queen Show, Miss Wet T-Shirt Contest, Donkey Racing, Greasy Pole and numerous cultural and sporting events. This regatta dates back to 1965 when it started as a local boat race using traditional fishing workboats. Since that time, it has evolved into a major Caribbean event and now includes keen competition among sailors from many islands - Grenada, Tobago, Martinique, Antigua, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
Carriacou has long been known for its age-old tradition of wooden boat building. In the village of Windward, sailing boats are built using the traditional methods passed down by the original Scottish settlers. Recent initiatives are encouraging young people to learn the art of boat building and to produce model boats. At any given time on the island, you will see numerous boats in various stages of being built. Don’t hesitate to ask the friendly locals about the boat building process and what it involves; they are always willing to chat.
There is certainly never a shortage of activities to pass the time on the island of Carriacou. It remains one of the Caribbean’s unspoiled and untouched gems, the perfect spot for your next Caribbean getaway.
