Adventure Collection member earns Lifetime Achievement Award
Adventure Collection is proud to announce that one of its founding members, George Wendt, president and founder of Outdoor Adventure River Specialists (O.A.R.S), was one of the recipients of the inaugural Adventure Travel Trade Association (ATTA) Lifetime Achievement Awards. He was bestowed with this honor during the ATTA Summit on October 19th 2006.
The ATTA Lifetime Achievement Awards honor past and present adventure pioneers of new routes and destinations, commercial adventure travel enterprises, responsible tourism practices, innovative partnerships, and groundbreaking consumer education and awareness initiatives in the world of adventure travel. George Wendt has continued to not only influence but also inspire a new generation of adventure travel.
"George Wendt deserves this recognition as a pioneer of the adventure travel industry," said Larry Mogelonsky, Executive Director of Adventure Collection. “His vision is inspirational to our members as well as all adventure travel operators.”
In 1969, George Wendt broke away form his career as a middle school math teacher to join his friend Ed Gooch in starting the first ever small-raft, oar-powered tour of the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon. Under his leadership, O.A.R.S has set 'Gold-bar' standards in whitewater rafting and has been recognized as the largest and most diverse river company in the West. Mr. Wendt has also played an active role in expanding O.A.R.S. tour destinations across America and the world, as well as developing legislation to protect America's rivers by preventing damming and over-development.
