Geographic Expeditions: Kilimanjaro by a New Route
GeoEx’s first summiters by our new Barafu-Crater Camp route have reported a gratifyingly grand experience. We switched to the new route when Kilimanjaro National Park closed the Western Breach approach, which we had used for many years.
The new trail to the summit, like the old, avoids the crowded ‘tourist’ routes, and allows for a gradual, beautiful, and nicely acclimatizing six-day climb, ‘from the equator to the arctic’, as the saying goes. It also gives us the chance to make camp in the peak’s crater, at over 18,000 feet. This is more than a dramatic and magic place; it allows us, after a nice hot breakfast to zip up to Kilimanjaro’s true highpoint, 19,340-foot Uhuru Peak, in only a couple of hours, rather than arise near midnight and begin a grueling slog to the summit, as the huge majority of Kilimanjaro climbers must. In addition, we also offer a delightful pre-climb, four-night stay at Campi Ya Kanzi. Our trip departs August 24th.
